For those who are new in internet marketing, it’s easy to make affiliate program as one of your top choices in starting your own business. The ground for this is the simplicity of the program functionality. However, some things need to be done before you commit yourself to join an affiliate program. First of all, it is wise to narrow down your selection instead of choosing just one program. Once you narrow down your choices, come up with questions that you like to get answer for, and do research on each program selected to get your questions answered. Think about what you will want to achieve later, this will be decided by the answers that you get.

The number one question that you want to ask is about cost, whether or not there is a charge involved in joining the program. Although some affiliate programs do impose charges, most that are being offered today don’t oblige you to pay in order to participate. The fact that most of these programs are free does not pinpoint a lack of quality in the programs. Therefore, there is no basis for us to prefer the paid over the free program. Further, there is also no ground for us to join paid affiliate program if both programs do offer the same quality. However, even though the quality of these programs are on par, both programs may not offer the same benefits, such as passive or residual income that most free affiliate programs do not offer.

As an affiliate, your job is to generate traffic to the merchant’s site. Therefore, you want to know how much traffic needs to be created before you can start seeing sales. This is called hit per sale, an essential statistics in affiliate marketing.

What about the tracking system? This is also another important factor to consider. How does the merchant track affiliate’s referrals? How long do these referrals remain in the system? Ask yourself if you can count on the merchant’s tracking system. Since your commission payment will be based on the tracking system, it is of utmost important that you have enough confidence in the program’s tracking system. Another important matter is the time period the visitors stay in the system. Since a lot of visitors do not like to expend their money right away, you will have visitors that will come back once or several more times before they actually make a resolution to buy. In this case you want to know whether or not you will still get the credit for the sale it’s done months the customer’s first visit.

What about the availability of affiliate stats? Whatever program you favor should have the capacity of offering detailed stats. Detailed stats such as how many impressions, hits, and sales have been generated from your site. Impressions are the number of times the advertisement, whether it be in the form of banner or text link, is displayed to the visitors of your site. A hit is when the visitor actually clicks on any of the advertisement. You need to have this information to not only appraise the effectiveness of the ads, but also to know whether or not your effort in directing traffic to the site is paying off. This information should be available online anytime you wish to check them out.

Besides commissions on sales, does the affiliate program also pay for the hits and impressions? This is another significant element to think about, because a program that pays for these impressions and hits will boost your bottom line. You especially want to know this if the program you are looking at offers low sales to be able to hit ratio.

What about the company background and history? It is absolutely necessary that you know that you are doing business with a solid company. Do as much research as you can before you make your decision. You need to know who you are dealing with. Besides studying their offers and finding out the average amount they have been realizing, you also want to know whether or not the program is really for you. The more due diligence you perform the easier you will draw a conclusion.

Is the program a one or two tier program? A single tier program pays you only for the business you yourself have originated. A two tier program not only pays for your business but it also pays you a commission on the sales generated by any affiliate you sponsor. This is done through monthly membership fees that each affiliate agrees to pay when they join the program. The sponsoring affiliates will gain a portion of these monthly fees. With this kind of program not only you need to be successful in producing sales, you also need to be successful in training your sponsored affiliates. This needs to continue along your downlines in order for you to be able to build a successful and effective business. Each affiliate success will depend on the success of the affiliates they sponsor. Some people may not like to be responsible for training the affiliates in their downlines; and therefore, they would prefer to join a single tier than two tier program. However, if training is done successfully, and your sponsored affiliates are able to duplicate your success, you will acquire the benefit of passive or residual income from your sponsored affiliates.

Lastly, what is the amount of commission paid? Some programs do pay high commission percentages, but most of them only pay about 5% – 20%. Moreover, those programs that pay for impressions, only pay .01% – .05% for each hit, not much really. Based on your situation, this may or may not be enough for you. And, this is why you want to know the average sales amount and hit to sale ratio.

The aforementioned is only some of the aspects you want to take into account, and questions that need to be answered. You need to be familiarized with these and many more facets presented by each program before you make your decision. At the very least, get the answer to the above questions before you choose to join any affiliate program. And, from here decide whether or not the program is right for you.
